Find the right power wheelchair in 4 questions

Answer these in order. The first “yes” tells you where to start. You can print this page and take it to your doctor or therapist.

  1. Does the user need help with posture, pressure sores, tilt, recline or standing?

Yes: see a physical or occupational therapist and a RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) first. Those chairs need a clinical fitting, and we do not cover them.

    No: go to question 2.

  2. Does the user weigh more than 300 lb?

Yes: look at chairs rated for 400 lb or more. Pick a chair rated well above the user's weight.

    No: go to question 3.

  3. Does the chair need to go in a car trunk or on a plane?

Yes: look at folding chairs with an airline-size battery, and read flying with a power wheelchair. Check the heaviest piece someone will have to lift.

    No: go to question 4.

  4. Will it be used for long days out, or mostly outdoors?

Yes: look at chairs rated for 15 miles or more, and check ground clearance and the steepest slope the maker rates it for.

No: compare all 15 chairs on weight, turning radius and width.
